Eurovelo 1

The Via de la Plata Route shares part of its path with the Eurovelo 1 cycle route. Eurovelo 1 is one of the 15 routes designed by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) within the Eurovelo project.

The objective of Eurovelo is to create a network of cycle routes that connect the whole continent and are designed for both tourist and daily use. The network is programmed to reach a total of 70,000 kilometres, of which nearly 40,000 are already functioning.

The routes are based on existing routes or new itineraries that help, wherever possible, to connect the different paths. Three of the Eurovelo routes cross Spain and Eurovelo 1 is one of them.

Eurovelo 1 connects North Cape in Norway with Sagrès in Portugal and, as it goes though Spain, it follows a long section of the Via de la Plata Route: from Zamora in Castilla y León to Monesterio in Extremadura.

The sporting event “Ruta Via de la Plata Non Stop/Eurovelo 1” (RVP – Non Stop/Eurovelo 1) is framed in the European Atlantic on Bike initiative which aims to establish Eurovelo 1 as a tourist product.

Atlantic on Bike is the result of the effort and passion for cyclotourism and sustainable tourism of 18 members in six countries (Norway, Ireland, United Kingdom, France, Spain and Portugal), supported and sponsored by the ECF.
